1. COVID-19 test

A negative COVID-19 test certificate must be provided within 72 hours prior to departure from the country (departure time of your flight).

Danger:
- It is strongly recommended that you do this if possibleformto be used for test evidence. Otherwise there may be considerable difficulties entering the country.
- Please make sure that only tests are recognized for entry into Japan in which a "nasopharyngeal swab / nasopharynx smear" (nasal swab) or "saliva" (saliva) has been taken as a sample A throat swab is not recognized!
- The rapid antigen test common in Germany often does not meet the requirements made in Japan. It is therefore not advisable to perform a rapid antigen test and rather a PCR test is recommended.
- The 72 hour period applies from the time the test is taken.

2. Quarantine measures

A) Even if you travel to Japan with a negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours of departure, you will be asked to join one upon arrival in Japan renewed COVID-19 test to undergo.
Please also note the following when entering Japan:
  • You need to sign up for Quarantined for 14 days either at your place of residence or another accommodation.
  • It is forbidden to use public transport to get to your residence or other accommodation. These include trains, buses, taxis and domestic flights.
B) As of January 14, 2021, all travelers to Japan must present a written pledge by which they undertake to adhere to the quarantine measures. Failure to comply with the measures can result in severe consequences.

C) All persons who have been in Germany in the last 14 days and who will arrive in Japan from Friday, March 5, 2021, must be accommodated in accommodation allocated by the quarantine officers for at least three days after entry (three days counted from the day after entry).
 
A new COVID-19 test will be carried out on the third day after entry (on the third and sixth day for those who cannot present a negative result of the COVID-19 test before departure). If the result is negative, you have to leave the accommodation assigned by the quarantine officers and move to your own apartment or to a self-organized accommodation without using public transport. You will then be asked to stay at home for the remainder of the 14-day quarantine period.
 
The costs for the assigned quarantine accommodation for 3 days as well as the two COVID-19 tests carried out after arrival in Japan are borne by the Japanese government.
Costs for self-organized quarantine accommodation and transport there must be borne by yourself.

3. Questionnaire / QR code

Upon arrival in Japan, a questionnaire must be submitted to the quarantine station. In the past, a paper-based questionnaire had to be completed. However, you can also choose whether you want to enter your personal information directly via an online questionnaire and thus receive a QR code. This code will then be presented to the quarantine officers upon arrival in Japan.
 
Danger: Although it is not mandatory to enter the information in the online questionnaire, some airlines require passengers to present the above QR code upon departure in order to go through the boarding process.

- Please note that for entry into Japan, only tests with a "Nasopharyngeal Swab" or "Saliva" as a sample collection are recognized. Tests in which only a throat swab is performed are not recognized!
- The antigen rapid test commonly used in Germany often does not meet the requirements set in Japan. It is therefore not advisable to carry out a rapid antigen test and a PCR test is recommended instead.

  • It is prohibited to use public transportation to your place of quarantine. This includes trains, busses, taxis and national flights.

B) From 14 January 2021, all nationals entering Japan will have to submit a Written Pledge committing to comply with the quarantine measures. Failure to comply with the measures will result in severe consequences.

C) All persons who have been in Germany for the last 14 days and arrive in Japan from Friday, March 5, 2021, must be accommodated in accommodation assigned by quarantine officials for at least three days after entry (three days counted from the day after entry ).
 
On the third day after entry (the third and sixth days for those who cannot provide a negative result of the COVID-19 test before departure), a new COVID-19 test will be conducted. If the result is negative, you will have to leave the accommodation assigned by the quarantine officials and move into your own flat or self-organized accommodation, without using public transport. You will then be asked to stay at home for the rest of the 14-day quarantine period.
 
The costs for the assigned accommodation for 3 days and the COVID-19 tests taken after arrival will be covered by the Japanese government.
Costs for self-organized quarantine accommodation for and transportation to that place must be covered individually.
