South Africa Global development partner in southern Africa

Germany's development partnership with South Africa is intended to support the country in overcoming its remaining development problems - particularly in the areas of governance, health, education and violence prevention. It should also contribute to global climate protection and strengthen South Africa in its important role for democracy, peace and stability on the African continent.

Official state development cooperation with South Africa began after the end of the apartheid regime. Since then, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has provided around 1.6 billion euros bilaterally.

At government negotiations in November 2018, new commitments of 253.6 million euros for 2017 and 2018 were made for bilateral projects. In line with the advanced level of development in the partner country, support is mainly provided in the form of loans. Of the total amount, 224 million euros are attributable to financial (call up lexicon entry for the term) * and 29.6 million euros to technical cooperation (call up lexicon entry for the term) *.

The focus of the cooperation lies in the following areas:

  • Energy and Climate ("Green Economy")
