3 I n d o G e r m a n F i l m w e e k: Foreword Namaste, dear friends of Indian film! We warmly welcome you to the 6th IndoGerman Filmweek. This year, strong women are the focus of the largest German festival for Indian films and Women in Indian Cinema is the theme of our art exhibition in the oval of Babylon. Women are a mainstay of Indian society, if not the mainstay and what is little known in Germany: Gender equality in pay at work has been regulated by law in India for more than 60 years and the Indian constitution dates back to 1950 is much more women-friendly than most of the constitutions of western countries. That does not mean that there are still injustices and areas in which women have to fight for their rights, but the social position of women in India and their living conditions are not as black and white and as bad as they are it is portrayed in many western media. The opening film Gold was directed by a strong director: Reema Kagti, whose films Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., Zindagi Na Milega Dobara (screenplay) and Talaash have cult status not only in India. Our guest Tannishtha Chatterjee is an exceptionally strong historical female figure Dr. Rakhmabai can be seen in the film of the same name and has just come to Berlin from the filming of her film director Rome rome mein. Strong women are at the center of numerous films such as Tumhari Sulu, Hichki, Song of Scorpions or 3 Storeys. Films in regional Indian languages such as the Tamil festival entry Aruvi, Nude in Marathi or Chuskit in Ladakhi are also carried by strong women. In general, there are many strong contributions to this year's film week from regional language areas such as B. Vikram Vedha (Tamil), the eagerly awaited Geetha Govindam (Telugu) or the German premiere of Sudani from Nigeria (Malayalam). Last but not least, we are premiering the German dubbed versions of Padmaavat and Hotel Salvation, as well as the German premiere of The extraordinary Journey of the Fakir, the German version of which is still in progress. On the following pages you can read what a great supporting program AMIKAL e.v. this year offers again. So we can only wish you a two-week wonderful and entertaining trip to India. 4 P r o g r a m m Most festival-goers have probably already seen Tannishtha Chatterjee in one of her numerous films. These include not only Indian but also a whole range of international productions. The German director Florian Gallenberger cast her in the shadow of time, she played a supporting role in the Hollywood film Lion and a leading role in the British drama Brick Lane. In India, for example, she has appeared in strong Indian women films such as Angry Indian Goddesses and Parched Time of Women. The talented actress is also currently working on her directorial debut. Lecture by Jigyasha Dass: Sound - The hidden picture Fri at 6:00 p.m. (oval), in English Watching films has become one of our main sources of entertainment. The film industry has developed tremendously in recent years. The biggest focus when watching a movie is cinematography and of course acting. But the sound that goes with it also plays an equally important role in the completion of a film. While the acting plays the most important role, the sound in the background changes the quality of a film. That can give the film a different meaning. The workshop makes it clear that sound is an unpredictable element. Workshop led by Rishabh Chhabra: Bhangra - the energy & power of India Sa, at 16:00 (Oval) Bhangra emerged from the traditional music of Punjab (North India) and looks back on a long culture. The story begins about 500 years ago in Punjab, where the farmers sang and danced to distract themselves while working. Today, Bhangra connects the different layers of India and is therefore an indispensable part of any party, wedding or other festivities. The concentrated power and energy of the dance literally captivate, which is why wherever bhangra music is played, nobody stands still. Bhangra is the combination of a happy but at the same time spirited dance, this becomes clear through the instruments (e.g. Dhol), the colorful clothes, the rhythmic and dynamic steps and jumps with mostly raised arms, shoulder accents. And don't forget: the most important rule is the big smile. If you would like to experience exactly this journey through North India in the form of the dance Bhangra, then visit the Berlin Bhangra Crew at their workshop. In doing so, she sparked a whirlwind of indignation that even took her to the Bombay High Court. Even though she eventually lost the case, she still refused to bow to the will of her stupid husband. She moved to England instead and earned a degree in medicine, and although she remains a black sheep in the eyes of Indian society, she is still returning to her homeland to fight for medical advancement. The German premiere of the film will take place in the presence of the main actress Tannishtha Chatterjee. Chatterjee has been a fixture in the international film industry as well as in independent cinema in her home country for years. She has already played alongside stars like Nicole Kidman and Keira Knightly in films like Lion and Anna Karenina and in much-praised festival hits like Monsoon Shootout and Parched (German cinema title: Zeit der Frauen). About the real character behind the film: As a young girl, Rakhmabai Raut was part of a spectacular court case that resulted in child marriages being banned in 1891. She herself was married to a 19-year-old when she was only 11 years old. She had lived with her parents for a number of years until her husband tried to sue for his marital rights. The court ruled in his favor, but Rakhmabai wrote to Queen Victoria, who eventually overruled the court and dissolved the marriage. From 1889 to 1894 she studied medicine at the London School of Medicine and, on her return to India, ran a hospital in Surat. Many of the problematic issues that Rakhmabai fought against have not yet been finally overcome, because even now only 30% of girls have access to education. 14th
