Buying Guide: Questions to Consider Before Buying a Gas Cooker
How does a gas cooker work?
The flame is often ignited electrically via the so-called piezo ignition. There is a rack above the flame on which the cookware is placed. A gas cooker usually has a rotary control that can be used to regulate the gas supply and thus the size of the flame. Depending on the type, additional equipment can be included, such as feet or a windbreak.
Make sure that a gas stove heats things up very quickly as it heats up over the flame.
Where is a gas cooker used most often and for whom is it suitable?
Even on fishing trips, a gas stove allows you to enjoy the fresh catch immediately. A gas cooker can also be used at a weekend event in the city park at designated places. The gas cooker is popular at open-air festivals because it is not connected to electricity. The small versions can easily be stowed in the rucksack and can easily withstand vibrations and "minor accidents".
The multi-burner stoves, on the other hand, are used more indoors and are used, for example, to upgrade mobile homes, boats or trucks. In theory, however, it can also be used in the kitchen. The indoor gas cookers offer several gas hobs and are usually more stable than their little brothers. But they also have a different weight on the scales and are therefore not used on excursions but, for example, in camps or larger camps.
What alternatives to a gas cooker are there and what are the advantages of the gas cooker?
However, there are various alternatives to the gas cooker, the advantages and disadvantages of which we would like to briefly introduce to you here.
Petrol is (theoretically) available at petrol stations everywhere. The petrol stove therefore initially appears to be more attractive. However, you should keep in mind that gasoline at gas stations is not 100% suitable for use in gasoline stoves.
The burner nozzles can easily become clogged due to the contamination. The big advantage of the gasoline stove is that it can be used at temperatures below freezing point. Special gas mixtures are necessary here for the gas cooker. Petrol stoves are usually much heavier and cleaning is more laborious.
A spirit stove is very easy to use. Alcohol is available in every supermarket. However, a spirit stove does not reach particularly high temperatures and cooking therefore requires significantly more patience. This can get worse at low temperatures.
The resulting smell is also unpleasant. However, alcohol stoves are usually very inexpensive and robust.
The so-called multi-fuel cookers offer the advantage that the chef de cuisine is not tied to a specific fuel that may be difficult to obtain. The multi-fuel stoves mostly use petrol, diesel or gas.
However, handling and commissioning is more complicated than with other stoves and a loud noise is annoying during combustion. Incorrect operation can lead to high levels of soot. The multi-fuel stoves are also only available from a price of around 100 euros.
