Transactional analysis gives a theory about personality and how people behave in certain contexts. Findings from personality analysis, relationship analysis and group dynamics flow into it.

All of this makes a decisive contribution to getting to the bottom of communication disorders, Understanding conflicts and solve.

Starting point of the transaction analysis

Berne revolutionized psychoanalysis at the time with two statements that seem simple at first glance:

  • I am ok
  • You are OK.

What's behind it?

  • Man is okay from birth, he comes with one good and healthy potential to the world.
  • Everyone, including those with mental health problems, is one full and intelligent Person.
  • They are in man himself necessary tools created to shape your own life.

The last point in particular requires of course that sufficient knowledge and practicable methods are available. But it cannot be overlooked that here is a principle positive understanding of people is predominant.

That has led to a new way of dealing with the sick and psychologists, that is now shaped by respect was and took place at eye level. At the same time, this approach to transaction analysis enables above all a new self-image for those affected.

According to this, all people are okay regardless of their mental illnesses. and all mental problems solvable.

The actual transaction model: parent-me, adult-me and child-me

For Berne it was human Communication the key to the psyche, because the way of communication shows the character, but also feelings and memories of a person. During his observations, he noticed different behaviors of people, which he divides into three states.

Between these three ego states These behaviors change people back and forth. The reasons for this are different desires, feelings and memories. This becomes apparent to outsiders on two levels:

  • On the verbal level: What is said in terms of content.
  • On the physical level: As it is said, namely through tone of voice, gestures and facial expressions.

All three ego states are shaped by thinking, feeling and behavior. And this is how they express themselves:

  • The parent self

Parents are the first idols. What they say has a lasting impact on us, especially in the first five or six years of life. It is crucial that at this age there are rules and commands from the child accepted unchecked because it is not yet able to critically question orders. In the parent-ego there are still not only statements and behavior from parents, but everything that a child records at that age flows into it.

In terms of communication with others, this can mean, for example, that you ...

    • patronize,
    • rebuke or
    • take care of.

On a physical level, the parent-self can reveal itself by showing your disapproval by frowning. Verbally, the parent-ego is reflected in pejorative remarks and prejudices.

  • The adult me

This condition is the prerequisite for objective, well-considered and respectful communication among adults. This can be seen in a constructive approach, if you consider your colleagues to be of equal value and treat them accordingly.

In contrast to the parent-ego, someone who is in the adult state knows about his options for action. He not only experiences situations, but actively influences on by making decisions. These in turn are made on the basis of verified information from all three ego states.

When communicating with other people, the adult self is revealed through attentive listening and reflective speech.

  • The child me

Simultaneously with the statements and rules of the parent self, a child collects impressions and feelings. According to Berne, based on the age of the child, that is in the first five years of life Feeling helpless dominant.

In his opinion, this leads to the fact that every person initially carries the attitude “I'm not okay” with them. The state of the child-ego can be observed when someone behaves spontaneously and without paying attention to consequences, is silly or defiant.

Even someone who approaches work with imagination, creativity and curiosity is in the child ego.

When communicating with one another, we often do not notice what state we are in, that is, the behavior takes place unconsciously.
