Outlook does not accept my password

If Outlook doesn't accept your password and you know you're using the correct password for your Gmail account, you may have an older version of Outlook that doesn't currently support this faster Gmail setup option. In that case, you'll need to use two-factor authentication and an app password to verify that you are the person trying to access your Gmail account.

Gmail allows you to add your account to Outlook without setting up two-factor authentication and without using an app password, but you must turn on a setting that allows "less secure apps" to connect to your account. This setting is not recommended. It is recommended to enable two-factor authentication and use an app password.

If you want to enable two-factor authentication and get an app password, follow these steps.

  1. Go to Gmail in your browser and select the Google Apps icon in the top right corner of the screen.
