Why is Samsung making exploding phones

Samsung Galaxy J5 is said to have "exploded", but the background is unclear

The Korean manufacturer Samsung is still struggling with the consequences of the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. The phablet's "exploding" batteries led to a complete recall of the device, and the company has been struggling with the damage to its image ever since. Now, according to a report, another model of the company has gone up in flames. Samsung will undoubtedly be busy processing the Galaxy Note 7 case for a long time to come. One thing is clear: At the moment, the Koreans cannot afford to make any mistakes, no matter how small. But according to the French news agency AFP, that is exactly what has now happened (via Die Presse).

A woman from France told AFP that her Galaxy J5 suffered a comparable battery damage: The device, which has been available since summer 2015, heated up a lot last weekend and then went up in flames.

The 33-year-old said she asked her four-year-old son to give her the smartphone. She found that the device was very hot and the back was deformed. Then she threw the device on the floor, a little later it "exploded" and smoked.

Exchangeable battery

The family is outraged and announced that they will sue the manufacturer. It remains to be seen whether she will be successful with this. Because the Galaxy J5 is an entry-level model with an exchangeable battery (via @LSAwesome), so it cannot be ruled out that a fake or cheap third-party battery may have been used.

Even if it was an original Samsung battery, one can probably speak of an isolated case: Because such battery malfunctions happen again and again, with the Galaxy Note 7 it was simply the extreme accumulation of incidents that have become a problem for Samsung.

Whatever actually happened with the Galaxy J5: The matter shows how great the uncertainty is in connection with Samsung. And also how you can benefit from it in the media. Various tabloid media are currently reporting in large letters that a Samsung cell phone has exploded again - however, details or other backgrounds are not even mentioned.
