What does a theoretical astrophysicist do

The vocational lexicon provides information about tasks and activities in the professions, job requirements, training and further education opportunities, employment opportunities, career prospects, initial income and much more. The vocational lexicon offers detailed information on around 1,800 professions.
* The salary details correspond to the gross salaries or gross wages at the start of the career. Caution: Most of the time, however, the information relates to a group of professions and not just to the one profession you are looking for. The data is based on the corresponding minimum salaries in the collective agreements (as of July 2018). You can find an overview of all entry-level salaries at www.contentskompass.at. The minimum wages and minimum salaries are regulated in the industry collective agreements. You can find the current wage and salary tables in the collective agreement databases of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB) and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ).

Job characteristics

In theoretical physics, physicists try to explain natural phenomena with the help of hypotheses. The basis for this are mathematical Methods and Modelswith the help of which they try to derive new hypotheses and laws.

Theoretical physicists develop theories based on the findings of experimental and computer-aided physics. They bring the laws of nature to one another in mathematical-model relationships and unite them in comprehensive theories (e.g. quantum theory). As a final result, they strive for the “physical worldview”. If contradictions indicate inconsistencies, they also challenge hypotheses and more detailed investigations into experimental physics.

An interest in science and technology is required for the training as well

  • Scientific curiosity and creativity
  • Analytical thinking
  • Mathematical skill: calculations
  • Good fine motor skills for laboratory work
  • Spatial imagination

Many tasks require perseverance and a confident use of software tools (simulations, statistics). Knowledge of foreign languages is important in research (literature, exchange of experts).

Career opportunities exist at universities as well as in technical-industrial applications (e.g. in research and development). While the career opportunities in theoretical physics are relatively limited, there are relatively good career prospects in various areas of application.

Other fields of work: Activity as a clerk for the processing of technical-scientific information. Expert (e.g. in the field of environmental protection, noise technology or energy supply) as well as patents and consulting.

The field of Neurophysics (Physics and Neurobiology), which deals experimentally with non-invasive and imaging methods such as magnetencephalography, positron emission tomography, functional nuclear magnetic resonance tomography and optical imaging.

Neurophysics deals with the question of how information is processed and stored in the brain. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of how the human brain works as well as impulses for future hardware and software architectures.
