Slytherin (school house)

Slytherin is one of four school houses at Hogwarts. It goes back to the founder Salazar Slytherin. The students are known as "Slytherins".

Like every Hogwarts house, the Slytherin house has its own coat of arms. It shows a silver snake on a green background. The snake can be considered Salazar Slytherin's favorite animal because the wizard was a Parseltongue and was able to talk to snakes. The house colors green and silver, which can also be seen on the students' clothing, are derived from this coat of arms.
House Slytherin has a bad reputation with many magicians. For example, before his first year in school, Ron was afraid to come to this house. Most of the Death Eaters and Lord Voldemort himself were in Slytherin during their school days.

Salazar Slytherin didn't like Muggles or magicians from Muggle families. Hence it is that most of the students in his house come from old wizarding families that have only been witches and wizards for generations. Nonetheless, it is also possible that students come to Slytherin who grew up in the Muggle world before their visit to Hogwarts.
In Slytherin, cunning and cunning, but also friendship are capitalized as character traits.

Every school house has a house spirit. In Slytherin, it's the Bloody Baron. It can be assumed that he and the Gray Lady (house ghost from House Ravenclaw) moved into Hogwarts as ghosts approximately at the same time around 1026-1030. Both represent the school house to which they belonged during their lifetime.

In the hallway in front of the Great Hall, the Slytherin glass is next to the other three house glasses that show the current score. It is filled with green emeralds. At the end of the school year, the house cup is celebrated in the Great Hall. The Slytherin house had won the house fight every year from 1984 to 1990. Especially between the schoolhouses Gryffindor and Slytherin there is fierce competition, which is not only fought in the classrooms but also on the Quidditch field.

On normal school days, every house in the Great Hall has a long table with wooden benches on the sides to seat all students from all years of the house. In Harry Potter's sophomore year, the Slytherin table sat between Hufflepuff's and Ravenclaw's.

Very often two houses of the same year are taught together for lessons. For example, Slytherin and Gryffindor have potions lessons together in Harry's first year and also have their first flying lessons with Madam Hooch.

Each house has a tutor who looks after the needs of its students. During his own school days, he was in the house where he later also becomes a tutor.
Severus Snape was the Slytherin Head of House for Harry's first six years at school. After that, Horace Slughorn, who was previously Head of House, has taken over the post again.

The Slytherin common room and the adjoining bedrooms of the different years are in the basement behind a stone wall. It can be assumed that the Slytherin common room is some distance from the Hufflepuff common room, which is also on the basement level. The stone walls are raw and unlike the Gryffindors, there aren't that many tapestries hanging on the walls. Greenish spherical lamps hang in chains from the ceiling. There is a fireplace in the common room and in front of it are several armchairs with high backs. In the film, the Slytherin common room is under the lake. This can be seen because one side of the room consists of large glass windows that allow a view of the soul beings.

In the seventh volume of the Harry Potter series, the Slytherins have to decide which side to fight on. Minerva McGonagall makes it unmistakably clear to the Head of House Horace Slughorn that he has to see that no student of the house endangers the resistance against Lord Voldemort. At the later school assembly in the Great Hall, the evacuation of the school will be announced and adult students will be given the opportunity to defend Hogwarts side by side with the teachers and give Harry Potter the necessary time. Students from Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw have joined the resistance. However, not a single one from the Slytherin House remained to fight on Harry Potter's side.
