Olive oils in the test: which oil is the best

Several consumer tests help to find the best olive oils in the various price ranges

The editors of the magazine "Der Feinschmecker" have been awarding the best tasting olive oils with the "OlioAwards" every year since 2003. Proven experts evaluate up to 1000 samples in a blind tasting.

The 2016 winners in the three fruitiness categories "light", "medium" and "intense" are: "Millenovecentosettantanove" by Fonte di Foiano, "Hispasur Gold Picual" by Hispasur Aceites and "Reserva Familiar Picual" by Castillo de Canena. They cost between 15 and 24 euros per half liter. Together with a further 247 recommended oils, they are presented at: www.olivenoeltest.de. The magazine published the latest results in its June 2017 issue.

The winners of the "New York International Olive Oil Competition" include European products as well as products from Australia, South Africa and the USA. The test results can be viewed at: www.bestoliveoils.com.

Supermarket goods cannot keep up with gourmet oils, according to a judgment by the "Stiftung Warentest" in February 2017. Only one of 24 products - "Bertolli Originale", fruity - was found to be "good" in terms of its sensory quality.

In the overall assessment, which also included the pollutant content and the correct declaration, even the best oils performed only "satisfactorily", including the own brands of the large discounters. Ten oils tasted so bad that they don't deserve the label "extranative".
