In all honesty, most bloggers get ripped off all the time because they just don't realize how much their work is really worth. Perhaps you are also unsure how much money you can charge for your jobs and blogger collaborations? You will get the answer to that in this post!

Before I fully concentrated on my online business around online courses, I was successful as a DIY blogger with my platform "Madmoisell". In this post I want to give you a few personal experiences from this time.

What exactly does a blogger do?

To put it in general terms: He writes on his website, his blog, about topics that are close to his heart or that he simply knows a lot about. The aim is to make this content so attractive that others will be happy to read it.

What does a blogger have to be able to do?

Of course, he has to be familiar with his subject! In addition, it doesn't hurt if, as a blogger, you have a feel for texts that are worth reading and can take nice photos. It all adds up to an attractive blog!

How can you monetize your blog?

There are many options here! An obvious one: you are working with companies that manufacture products that fit your niche. For a fee, you can present the products in a blog post.

What's the biggest mistake bloggers make?

They don't get paid properly for their work! In this post, I'll tell you how you can do it differently in the future.

Stumbling block # 1: Never work for free on blogger collaborations!

Unfortunately, I still see Instagram or blog posts every day in which you cheerfully thank you for product XY, which happens to be really great and was graciously sent by company YZ. So it is not a negotiated cooperation, but the influencer was simply sent a product.

Why is that? Many companies gamble on the fact that they might just report on the product without paying.

You might not believe it, but especially in my days as a DIY blogger, I have Receive parcels daily, without asking, to the address given in my legal notice. Of course, I have noted in my imprint that I am not interested in such packages - in vain.

Most bloggers are still unaware of HOW valuable their blog / Instagram account is and that small ranges are also relevant for companies (keyword micro-influencers).

For companies, for example, it is already worth gold if you "only" have an Instagram account with 1000 followers, but take a nice photo of the products made available for free.

One of the advantages for the company: You can easily access user-generated content - free of charge! Can you imagine HOW MUCH money it would cost this company to have such photos professionally created and used for advertising purposes? If they had given the blogger 50 euros for the collaboration, they would still have gotten away with it more than cheaply!

Regarding the Instagram companies that rely on free content from bloggers, I could give many examples: Watch manufacturers, stationery shops, wool manufacturers ... you wouldn't just come to work for free because your boss says, for example, that it is an honor to work at this workplace, right?

Make it very clear that everything you do for your blog (including non-sponsored blog posts) is YOUR working time.

And calculate how much the equipment alone costs youto continue your blog. For me it was in DIY times:

  • Two cameras: around € 2,500
  • Web hosting and technical support: variable, approx. € 10 per month
  • iMac for video editing: € 1,700
  • Software for video editing: 400 €
  • And don't forget: your own working hours! For me it was at least 15 hours a week at the beginning, with an hourly rate of 15 € I get 900 € per month, which I should have earned with my blog in the long term in order not to make a loss.

Sure, if you work with friends, bloggers or companies on a friendly basis, then you don't have to stick to it stoically. For example, I always liked to link my friends (although the XY € is worth it) and in return for a free setting, e.g. made videos for a cupcake shop in Berlin.

Here it is always important to find the right solution for you, but never forget that you are investing love, time and money in your blog.

Stumbling block # 2: Contact with cooperation partners & psychological leverage

How do you manage to negotiate a reasonable fee? I have seen very often that psychological leverage is used to confuse or deceive the blogger. Sure - the company wants to act as economically as possible.

At the very beginning of collaborations, I often received emails like this:

  1. "The feature in our company catalog (for which I am supposed to produce exclusive content) is a great opportunity for you, as our catalog reaches x thousand readers across Germany."
  2. "The workshop you lead (for free!) Is a great opportunity to promote your blog to many thousands of readers!"

In all honesty: If someone wants something from me and I make my working time available for it, then the company has to pay for it!

When I send my price list for the first time, the following answer often comes up:

  1. "Since your blog is still quite new / small and / or is in its infancy, we can unfortunately only offer you a fee of X €" (approx. 30% of the price I asked)
  2. "We have never paid such high sums to bloggers with our entire agency experience" or "IcH (Employee at company XY) I come from the blogger industry and think that your fee is well above the normal budget. "

Unfortunately, thanks to my own experience in a PR agency, many negotiations and discussions with other bloggers, I know exactly what the high sums are paid to other bloggers or for advertising purposes in general. In addition, it makes no sense to me if agency X accepts my fees without discussion and agency Y finds that I should work for a fraction of this price.

When everything has already been agreed, I should sign contracts "as soon as possible":

Once everything has been discussed, the following email often arrives: "Could you sign this contract and return it as soon as possible?" The contract itself contains points that I had never agreed to in advance: For example, I should completely cede my image rights, which is usually extremely expensive, especially for advertising purposes! More on this in the next point.

Stumbling block # 3: No offers or contracts drawn up

Most of the time I waited until I received contracts from agencies or companies. But sometimes that wasn't the case and I didn't ask myself. Usually everything goes well, but if something unexpected happens (e.g. customer refuses to accept the produced content), you will be much better off with a contract and clear agreements!

Before you start to work, you should secure yourself with a written offer for all of the services you have to provide.

The customer must then confirm this offer. I quickly started to work with my own terms and conditions, in which I noted exactly when I don't have to make correction loops (e.g. if I have adhered to the briefing 1: 1) and when I do them and in what period of time.

Stumbling block # 4: Negotiating image rights to your disadvantage

A very important point that a layperson can easily get wrong. My basic principles with image rights are as follows:

I will provide existing images free of charge (only for this one purpose and with credit) if it is a question of Inquiries from larger magazines / newspapers with interview is about me, because I can use that as a clipping later
For advertising purposes (e.g. company catalog) I have one back then Fee between 150-200 € per picture negotiated (in retrospect I know that a lot more would have been possible!)
The same applies to magazines that want to use the picture without an interview.
Exclusive content I have never free produced (not even for a great feature!). Here I usually calculated an hourly rate of 80 euros. As the reach of your blog increases, you can add a lot to it here! In the end, I have already agreed well over 10,000 euros for collaborations.

Stumbling block # 5: correction loops and subsequent changes

This is also an important topic on which I have already made a lot of mistakes myself: I stuck to briefings 1: 1, but the customer still wanted something different afterwards. Several times, agencies have already requested the complete new production of my content, even though I kept to the briefing!

Important: If you can prove that you adhered to the briefing, you should NEVER re-produce for free.

It is also not your duty to redo everything. Sure, if the briefing says "do not use a colorful background when taking photos" and you take photos on a bright pink background, then the customer naturally has the right to a new production.

Here it is always important to admit your own mistakes fairly, but also not to allow yourself to be exploited on the other side.
