The turning point came on February 29th in the South Carolina primary. Until then, Bernie Sanders was ahead. There was rumbling in the Democratic Party. Should you really run against Trump with the decidedly left-wing candidate Sanders? Was there a risk of scaring off moderate voters and losing them again to Trump in November?

South Carolina provided the answer: almost half of the electorate voted for Joe Biden, while Bernie Sanders received just under 20 percent of the vote. It was clear: large parts of the party base were uncomfortable with the idea of getting into the race with Sanders. Biden, who is considered moderate, became the favorite practically overnight.

Problems with black voters

This was also due to a weakness that significantly prevented Bernie Sanders from defeating Hillary Clinton four years ago: Sanders was and is not well received by the black electorate. A primary victory is almost impossible without broad support from this large group of voters.

Sanders has fallen more and more behind in the last few weeks. And the corona virus recently made a normal election campaign impossible. So there was little hope for Sanders. Today's surrender is the corollary.

Is there a threat of a split similar to that four years ago, when many angry Bernie fans refused to support Hillary Clinton? Again, a particularly fanatical section of the Sanders supporters could not vote for Joe Biden. But the conflict is so far less dramatic than it was then. Biden and Sanders get on well personally. And the fear of Trump's re-election is likely to unite the party more than it did four years ago.

Biden is missing the young voters

Joe Biden has to be careful, however, that he doesn't make the same mistakes as Clinton. At the time, it did not succeed in winning enough young voters for itself. Even the visibly aged Biden often lacks the dynamism and enthusiasm of Bernie Sanders.

It is quite possible that Biden is trying to compensate for this weakness with a younger vice presidential candidate at his side. For example, Gretchen Whitmer, the popular governor of Michigan, has a good chance. And Joe Biden has to hope that Bernie Sanders can mobilize his young followers for him in November.

Bernie Sanders, meanwhile, can claim to have made some previously decried as radical concerns - such as state health insurance - socially acceptable in parts of the US population. But he must now finally bury his dream of the presidency.

SANDERS would have had no chance against DT because of his political statement. Even BIDEN will have a very difficult time, the DEMS failed to build up new, young people in time.

Well Sanders was America's chance for a 2nd FDR, against which the reps had to introduce the time limit because he was re-elected because of his "too left" politics. Sanders would introduce a new new deal, etc. And the Americans would notice that they were suddenly better and would love Sanders ... 100%.

  • Comment from Beat Kessler (KLERUS)
Biden will lose this election, mainly because he is currently holed up in his house. Sure, he belongs to the risk group, but it was precisely in this crisis that he could have taken on the role of moderate leader. It is clear that Biden would be the better president, only the Americans have already elected Bush junior and this does not show any predictability ...
