What is a computing environment in cloud computing
The blessing and the curse of cloud computing is that it's actually quite easy to get started. In many cases, you start with the cloud as a technical approach and then move on to a strategic approach over time. One of the advantages of cloud computing is that you can try a service, find out how it works, and how it can benefit your business, at a very low cost. You simply sign up for a service.
And that could be a good starting point. However, make sure you think strategically, not just about one or more cloud services. examine how these services fit into your general computing strategy. You need to ask yourself the following questions.
How confused is my computing environment?
Whether you're a small business or a large business, you likely have a lot of uses. Some applications may have been developed in-house while others may be software packages. What Makes a Computing Environment Complicated? There could be hundreds of these applications with thousands of dependencies difficult to untangle. Most data centers have evolved over time into a complex, tangled web of applications, servers, and networks.
What is my data center environment?
If you are considering getting rid of some applications and moving them to the cloud, think about the implications for your entire business. Many computing environments are not set up as a set of well-defined services.
Analyze the current status of your computing environment. This type of analysis gives you indications of possible cost savings. Instead of moving applications straight to the cloud, you may first need to simplify your internal computing environment.
Take a close look at your data center:
Is the architecture consistent or does each application have its own architecture?
Are there general business services that multiple applications use?
Are these general business services standalone (or do they depend on other applications and services in your environment)?
Has your organization implemented workload management?
The more services your computing environment supports, the better prepared your organization is to use different cloud services. It's much more difficult to move components to the cloud when you can't separate applications or business services from your data center services.
Which data supports my cloud strategy?
Look at the information that is running in your data center. Before moving data to the cloud, you should think about your company's privacy and compliance issues, security issues, and data management issues.
It seems like a lot of work going through the practice of understanding your current environment. It is critical to help you choose the right cloud strategy for your organization.
You may think that the best place to start is to implement Infrastructure as a Service to add incremental storage capacity to support a new business initiative.
You can choose to use Platform as a Service to limit the capital expenditures required to develop a new application.
Another starting point could be adding software as a service to analyze what the market is saying about your products and possible acquisition targets.
Some organizations may need a business process as a service (such as an on-demand supply chain service) that can aid in testing a new line of business.
