10,000 step hype: How many steps a day does it really have to be?

Many people have a common goal: to run 10,000 steps a day. Pedometers are also often used. But do you have to feel guilty if you take fewer steps?

  • Leave the car and walk if you can
  • Park further away and walk the rest of the way
  • Go for a walk during your lunch break or in the evening
  • Avoid the escalator and elevator and take the stairs instead

As a guide: 1,000 steps take about ten minutes. Progress can be measured particularly well with a step counter. Step counters support the implementation of the number of steps taken. Movement becomes visible and quantified in this way. That means you can see how much you've really walked.

But how exactly do the little helpers really count? Reliable pedometers are those with a so-called piezoelectric element. This measures the movements with the help of electrical voltage.

The origin of the 10,000-step hype is said to have been one of the first portable pedometers from the Japanese company Yamasa. The "Manpo-kei" - which means something like "10,000-step measuring device" - was part of a marketing campaign from 1965 and thus picked up the interest in the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
