Painting concrete blocks in five steps - tips, recommendations and instructions

This is normal, because even concrete blocks cannot withstand the various weather conditions unscathed in the long term. Unfortunately, the property looks neglected with weathered cobblestones. Many house residents want to change that and restore the original look of the concrete blocks with as little time and energy as possible.

This approach is also useful if you have had enough of your concrete pavement and want to bring a breath of fresh air with a new design. For an attractive appearance, it is important to ensure that the colors are evenly distributed and that the durability of the concrete glaze is taken into account at the planning stage. The reason: The different types of concrete show different suction behavior. That is why the paint adheres better to some concrete blocks and worse to others.

In today's Heimhelden.de guide you will therefore find answers to all the questions you might ask yourself on the subject of "painting concrete blocks". We have brought you a lot of tips and advice to make your work easier. You will also find detailed step-by-step instructions at the end of the guide, thanks to which you will certainly not make any mistakes when painting the paving stones.

Important preliminary considerations before painting the concrete blocks

In order to paint concrete blocks with concrete glaze, it is important that the individual blocks are still intact. They must not have any breaks or cracks. In order for the colored coating to be uniform and durable, it is also important that the stones in question are really specimens made of concrete.

Clinker or natural stone can only be given a colored coating to a limited extent. Most of the time, the paint on these building materials is not durable.

You should also consider the following fact before you put your project into practice: When the concrete blocks are painted, the surface of the blocks is also sealed at the same time. While on other substrates it is sufficient to apply a skin made of acrylic paint, this is not the case with paving stones. It would deprive the stones of their ability to breathe, which would be a major disadvantage. In addition, paint skins that are only applied externally to the concrete blocks would only last a short time and would peel off again quickly.

Concrete glaze - the solution for painting concrete blocks

For this reason, you always have to work with a special concrete glaze when you want to paint concrete blocks. It is able to bond permanently to the concrete because it penetrates the building material, creating a long-lasting colored coating. The color pigments are firmly anchored in the concrete block. Therefore, the concrete glaze will not peel or flake off.

A concrete glaze offers the following advantages:

  • It connects completely with the concrete blocks
  • It is permeable to water vapor and therefore maintains the breathability of the concrete
  • It is available in over 30 different colors - including natural colors
  • It is lightfast and non-yellowing

There is even a lotus effect concrete glaze. It prevents dirt from accumulating. The stones treated with such a glaze practically have a self-cleaning function, so that they are then particularly easy to care for. Since colored concrete blocks are only available in a few shades and are also very expensive, concrete glaze is a good option to paint the concrete blocks in any color in a permanent and durable manner. Appealing patterns can also be realized in this way, so that there are no limits to your creativity thanks to the concrete glaze.

A covering color skin is also possible

With a concrete glaze you will hardly be able to achieve an opaque color skin.

If you still want an opaque color skin for optical reasons, you should work with road marking paint.

It is more expensive than conventional acrylic paint, but also many times more durable.

The concrete-specific primer is the be-all and end-all

If you want to paint concrete or granite stones, it is also important that you first apply a concrete-specific primer. It optimally prepares the surface of the concrete for the subsequent application of paint. Such a primer is also important if you do not want to paint paving stones on the floor, but rather a concrete garden wall.

Painting concrete blocks in five steps - how to proceed

Now you already know which aspects are particularly important when painting concrete blocks. If you follow the instructions below, nothing stands in the way of a successful implementation of your project.

Tools and materials

Before you can get started, however, a visit to the hardware store is still required. You will need some materials and tools to properly paint your concrete blocks.

  • Concrete stone glaze in any color
  • Concrete-specific primer
  • If necessary turpentine and / or cat litter - for grease stains on the paving stones
  • water

As soon as you have obtained all the materials and tools and have them ready, you can start the actual work.

1st step: cleaning the paving stones

The first step is to thoroughly clean the concrete blocks. Small stones, sand, moss, dust, verdigris and other dirt must be removed from the pavement. A high-pressure cleaner is suitable for this. But you can also work with a conventional scrubber.

Greasy dirt must also be removed from the concrete blocks before you start painting, otherwise it will not adhere.

You can use cat litter or turpentine to remove grease and oil stains. Before the next step, the paving stones need to dry.

Step 2: Check the suction properties of the concrete pavement

Now pour or spray water on the concrete pavement. This step is important to check the absorbency of the concrete. Watch how quickly the water dries after you spread it on the stones. If you notice that the damp spots disappear again very unevenly, it is particularly important to proceed thoroughly with the primer in the next step.

3rd step: priming the concrete blocks

Now apply the primer recommended by specialist retailers for concrete blocks. Make sure to distribute the primer thinly and evenly. It is best to use the thinnest mixing ratio stated on the packaging. Then let the primer dry for a long enough time. At outside temperatures of over 15 degrees it needs about 24 hours.

4th step: apply paint

In the penultimate step, the concrete glaze is applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid too thick an application. If in doubt, it is better to paint several times.

5th step: Second coat

As soon as the first coat has dried, you can paint over the stones a second time. Note the different drying times, for example due to the shade and the sun.

Summary

Weathered concrete blocks are visually unappealing. They can be easily colored with concrete glazes. This restores the attractive appearance.
