What does the biorhythm say?

Biorhythms are the repetitive behavior patterns of people and other organisms. The science of chronobiology deals with these patterns and examines the regularities. In common parlance, the internal clock is also used. A simple example of the different biorhythms of people: Some people jump out of bed fit and motivated in the morning. Others fall more badly than right on their feet.

The biorhythm goes beyond this internal clock. Its effects can be seen in many places during the day:

  • in the personal energy level throughout the day,
  • in productivity,
  • in the moods
  • in sleep behavior.

How important is the biorhythm?

The biorhythm is wrongly underestimated by many. There are several benefits to knowing your circadian rhythm and working with it, rather than against it.

What controls the biological rhythm?

The day-night change is the most important influence on the biorhythm. Scientists also speak of biological desynchronization in this context when employees work against their biorhythm, for example on night shifts.

Even if some people count themselves among the night owls: From a biological point of view, humans are diurnal mammals. This can be seen well in the body functions of humans, which take place in a daily alternation:

The biorhythm is primarily controlled by light and brightness. It influences the release of hormones and thus physical activities.

Biorhythm in the course of the day: the basic types

Important to understand: These are averages of the basic types. The times vary in individual cases. It is therefore all the more important to determine your individual biorhythm. Just because you are an owl or a lark does not mean that your personal times are exactly the same as those pictured above.

How do you find your biorhythm?

There are now numerous sites on the Internet that offer a so-called biorhythm calculator. Based on the birthday, he wants to be able to calculate whether you have a good or bad day and what your personal physical, emotional and intellectual state is. Caution is advised here: Such calculations are based on pure pseudoscience.

You can find out your personal biorhythm more easily and reliably. This requires attentive and honest self-reflection. Observe yourself, your daily routines and changes during the day. Use the following questions as a guide:

  • When do you feel good?
  • When are you tired?
  • When is the work so easy for you?
  • When do you need a break?
  • When do you have your best ideas or do you find simple solutions?
  • When do you grab coffee or sweets?

In addition, write down the results in a daily-hour calendar and visualize an average performance curve. After all, you know yourself best and also know about your strongest and weakest moments. However, don't make the mistake of figuring out your biorhythm from a single day. That does not work. Better analyze your biorhythm over a longer period of time. One week is the minimum. A month is even better.

Can you change your biorhythm?

You have found your biorhythm - but unfortunately it does not match your working day and the usual processes. Owls that have to sit in a meeting early in the morning work against their own rhythm. However, you cannot change your own biorhythm. Neither early risers nor night owls can get out of their skin. Although minor adjustments can be made with the necessary discipline, you cannot completely change your personal circadian rhythm.

A problem, because in many industries and professions, working hours are hardly flexible. The world of work also takes no account of the biorhythm of employees. Your boss is unlikely to let you start two hours later. It doesn't matter whether it fits your biorhythm or not.

Tips: How to Use Your Biorhythm Correctly

If you know and understand your biorhythm, you can orient yourself to it and take advantage of it. The following tips will help you to use your biorhythm correctly and to work more focused, motivated and therefore better:

  • Listen to your body
    You cannot change your biorhythm, but neither should you ignore it. Listen to the signals your body is sending you and try to follow your rhythm as much as possible. Anyone who tries to act against their body only suffers unnecessarily from more stress, is more frustrated and less productive. Ultimately, your health will also suffer. If your body is crying out for a break, you should take it.
  • Distribute tasks accordingly
    Once you know when your highs and lows occur in the course of the day, you can align your tasks accordingly. You cannot change your working hours, but you can usually influence the organization and order. Use the times of high productivity and concentration to work on important projects. You can also deal with unimportant to-dos in weaker phases of the day.
  • Pay attention to your sleep rhythm
    Your biorhythm can only work if you maintain a regular sleep rhythm. For example, those who work shifts at night and eat and sleep at different times will also mess up their body functions. Such a mess is reflected in the biorhythm, since your rhythm is based on your personal sleeping habits. It is better to have constant sleeping and getting up times.
  • Do not exaggerate
    It is right to use the high phases to get as much done as possible. However, don't overdo it. The biorhythm also has limits. Instead of overloading or overwhelming yourself, you should concentrate on the most important points in the best times. Set clear priorities for the day.
