What is a list for exorcism

Despite the corona crisis, a course in exorcising the devil will take place for the 15th time at a papal university in Rome in autumn. The Catholic Church understands the term as a request to God to free man from the power of evil.

The unique exorcism seminar at the University of Regina Apostolorum from October 26th to 31st is aimed at interested priests and lay people of different denominations.

According to a press release, the results of "thorough and multidisciplinary academic research on exorcism and deliverance prayer" will be presented. The University of Bologna and several international experts were involved in the work.

Ritual expulsion of evil forces

Exorcism is the ritual expulsion of evil forces and spirits from people, living beings or objects. Such practices exist in all cultures. They should serve holistic cleansing and healing. The word comes from the Greek term "exorkizein" and means "conjure away".

The Catholic Church understands the term as a request to God to free man from the power of evil. Exorcism can also include an order given to the devil in the name of Jesus Christ to leave the victim. The Church derives the authority to carry out exorcism from the New Testament. The model is Jesus' casting out of demons.

Performed in a simple form at baptism

The exorcism consists of prayers as well as blessings and incantations. It is performed in a simple form at baptism. According to canon law of 1983, the so-called solemn or "great exorcism" may only be carried out by a suitable priest with the approval of the responsible bishop.
