Watch Netflix US in Germany - that's how it works
With VPN you can also stream and watch the US Netflix offer in Germany. We explain how to do it.
Netflix is one of the most popular TV and movie streaming services. However, the offer is not the same everywhere. American users, for example, are often offered more films than German users, and new series and films are often available there earlier than in other countries. But there is a way to take a look at what is on offer in America.
The best way to do this is to use a VPN. Examples are NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Cyberghost VPN or PureVPN. A VPN makes Netflix think you're getting the program straight from the US. With the same technology, you can also use the American streaming service Hulu and the television and radio station BBC iPlayer in Germany.
And this is how you proceed:
Download a VPN like NordVPN, ExpressVPN or Cyberghost VPN to your PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet
Open the VPN app and choose a US server
Navigate to Netflix.com and sign in
We'll explain these steps in more detail. However, there is no guarantee that it will actually work, and you should also proceed with some caution.

Has Netflix banned VPNs?
For a long time, you only had to use a VPN to watch American Netflix, for example. Meanwhile, Netflix has started to block VPNs and proxies: in early 2016, Netflix announced that it would prevent users from using a VPN or proxy to access content from another region in order to "license content based on geographic location Respect and enforce the location ".
The VPN services therefore have to constantly look for new solutions - this means that the services mentioned in this article do not always work for every user - no VPN can guarantee that you will have access to the American Netflix offer at all times.
Netflix does not say that they want to block the accounts of people who use VPNs or proxies - these users should only be restricted so that they can only see the Netflix offer from their own country.
However, Netflix has changed its terms and conditions, stating, "You also agree not to bypass, remove, change, disable, deteriorate, or thwart any content protection on the Netflix Service," and "We may your use of ours Terminate or limit the service without compensation or notice if you, or if we reasonably believe that you 1. violate any of these terms and conditions or 2. are involved in any illegal or improper use of the service. "
This affects those who use VPNs to "virtually cross borders" and means you access a foreign Netflix service at your own risk - the company probably won't ban you or delete your account, but they have the right to.
How to use a VPN to watch American Netflix
Now that you know the risks, it's up to you whether you still want to use a VPN to watch the American Netflix offer. Then the first step is to download a VPN on your computer or device (some are browser plug-ins, not apps, but they all work very similarly). We'll use NordVPN first and then Cyberghost VPN as an example.
With NordVPN ...
Go to NordVPN's website and scroll all the way down. There are several subscription versions (if you click on "Buy now" you will see all versions) - the 3-year package is currently the cheapest, where you only pay 2.62 euros per month. However, the full amount is due in advance.
Download, install and launch the app. Once the app is open, you'll need to connect to the country where you want to fool Netflix - in our case, the US. You can navigate to the USA via a map view or simply click on "List" and select USA there. After a few moments, you should be connected. You can now navigate to Netflix and should have access to the American content.
With Cyberghost VPN ...
Install the Cyberghost VPN software on the computer. In the systray click with the right mouse button on the Cyberghost VPN icon and then select a US server in the context menu under "Streaming" that is optimized for the use of Netflix.
If you have trouble getting Netflix to work, choose a different US server. It is possible that a certain server was recently blocked and the respective provider has not yet managed to find a solution. Usually, however, companies have a technology that works in the background and is supposed to prevent this from happening.
Using a VPN on a game console or on a smart TV
While most of the major VPNs now have apps for smartphones and tablets, as well as PCs and Macs, there are likely still some devices that are not supported, such as a game console or smart TV (although some VPNs support these directly) or a Fire -TV stick. Don't worry, you can still use a VPN to watch Netflix.
How you set this up depends on your VPN and router. Typically you will have to go into your router's web configuration panel from a computer and use your login credentials to connect to the VPN you have chosen. You can find more detailed instructions on the support page for your VPN.
