What is a mechanical engineer
Mechanical engineer - job description, training, studies, salary and professional future
The engineer in the field of mechanical engineering currently has very good prospects for a job. Many companies do not advertise any vacancies at all, but pick up the mechanical engineers directly from the university.
Mechanical engineers are mainly employed in industry, but there is also a need in other areas.
Your area of responsibility is wherever machines are used. The engineering office then takes over the design and planning, or the advice and technical investigation.
Research and development in this area usually takes place at universities.
The locations are very often different and can be abroad. For this reason, machine builders are not infrequently traveling abroad. The construction of machines and systems here relates to areas of energy supply or agriculture. The organization and monitoring of production is also part of the area of responsibility.
Vacancies for mechanical engineers can of course also be found in the public sector. Self-employment is also an alternative, whereby as a freelancer, more of an advisory activity is exercised.

Training and studies as an engineer in the field of mechanical engineering
The course to become a Dipl.-Ing. (Uni) mechanical engineering or Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Mechanical engineering is also subject to changes, as are all courses in Germany that were converted to Bachelor and Master degrees in the course of the Bologna Process. The diploma is no longer awarded, there are only titles such as Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering, Master of Science, Master of Engineering, etc.
Current designations are typically also mechanical engineer, engineering manager, engineer for mechanical and plant engineering or mechanical engineer.
The study duration is between 9-10 semesters, if an internship is integrated, the standard study time can also be 10-11 semesters. In 2003, the average study time of graduates at technical colleges and universities was 12.9 semesters. This has become significantly shorter due to the switch to master's and bachelor's degrees.
An innovative and creative profession with responsible tasks.
Mechanical engineering is an important pillar of the German economy. Due to the variety of fields of application, ranging from traffic engineering, space technology, microtechnology to the production of robots, machines and tools, specialization in one subject is necessary during the course of the course.
Entry into professional life as an engineer can only take place once the qualification has been completed and passed the exam.
Personal requirements, tasks and skills
The interest in technology must be laid out in every “machine builder”, also in mathematics. Planning and organization are just as important for success as economic thinking. Implementing ideas with the help of data processing systems such as CAD or CAE also requires a good knowledge of IT.
Foreign language skills are more and more a hiring criterion, although it is of course also beneficial if you already have practical experience in the industry or field of activity. Internships abroad are therefore ideal.
Salary in mechanical engineering
Hardly any other occupation currently has such a low unemployment rate as this area; it has halved in the last seven years, while the others have mostly doubled. It has never been easier for a mechanical engineer to find a job in Germany than it is today.
Of course, this should not hide the fact that it has already been different.
The starting salary is around 40,000 euros, but it can even increase quickly. The collectively agreed earnings are in a range between 3800 and 4300 euros as an employee. Other professional groups can only dream of this.

Of course, this profession is dependent on economic development, but mechanical engineering has a key role in Germany and is the guarantee for positive developments that can be carried over to other industries.
