What is the Sermon on the Mount?

The Sermon on the Mount is a speech that the itinerant preacher Jesus of Nazareth gave on a mountain in northern Israel when he was about 30 years old. It is probably the most famous sermon of Jesus and marks the beginning of his public ministry. In it he lays out his basic program, so to speak, and lays down rules for living together.

In the sermon, which can be read in the Bible in the Gospel of Matthew (chapters 5-7), Jesus calls people to love their fellow human beings, even their enemies, and to treat everyone with respect. He calls on them to do good and to help each other, especially the disadvantaged and weaker.

The Sermon on the Mount contains passages of text that are considered core parts of Christianity today, such as the Beatitudes, the commandment to love one's enemies, the "Golden Rule" and the Our Father.

What does the Sermon on the Mount say?

The Sermon on the Mount is in the New Testament of the Bible in the Gospel of Matthew and is three chapters long. It contains central and still significant words of Jesus, including the Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer, the commandment to love one's enemies and the "Golden Rule".

At the beginning there are nine beatitudes. Each begins with the words "Blessed are" such as:

Blessed are those who suffer; because they should be comforted [...]

Matthew 5.4

Then that follows Parable of salt and light. Incidentally, the German Evangelical Church Congress took place in Stuttgart in 1999 under this motto.

You are the salt of the earth [...] You are the light of the world.

Matthew 5: 13-16

Jesus also speaks about basic rules and explains the Ten Commandments in more detail. He speaks in the so-called Antitheses including about adultery, fasting, swearing and killing. His call to love not only friends but also enemies was discussed intensively:

But I say to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:44

The Sermon on the Mount also contains the most important prayer of Christians, the Our Father. The "Golden Rule"which explains in just one sentence how people should behave. The ethical principle is similar in many other religions.

Now whatever you want people to do to you, do it for them too! That is the law and the prophets.

No text has influenced world history as much as chapters 5 to 7 of the Gospel of Matthew. The teaching of Jesus is concentrated in the Sermon on the Mount, it contains the core elements of faith. The history of its impact runs through 2000 years of Christianity. Do you know the Sermon on the Mount?
Mother's Day encourages you to buy flowers - the Bible encourages you to honor mothers. And gives a few pointers. An overview.
Jesus charged all who follow him to preach: "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creatures" (Mark 1: 5). A high art of preaching developed from the beginning of Christianity. Its basis is the message of the resurrection of Jesus: "If Christ has not risen, our preaching is in vain, and your faith is also in vain" (1 Corinthians 5:14).
