How do toads eat worms
Feeding frogs in the terrarium
The feed intake
In other words, frogs hunt and prey on live food. Therefore, the food for frogs in the terrarium also consists of live food animals. Of course, the decisive factor is the size of the well-groomed frog. A fully grown frog of only a few centimeters final size naturally prefers other types of food than, for example, a bullfrog or a large toad. Nevertheless, all frogs living on land have in common that they feed on live food such as flies, maggots, worms, flying insects, their larval stages and, in the case of the large species, on other small animals. In the latter, small conspecifics, lizards and even small mammals can be part of the food spectrum. The prey is optically captured by the movement, in the water there are also touch stimuli absorbed through the skin. They usually do not perceive immobile invertebrates as food. When snapping shut, the insect is pulled into the mouth with the tongue, and food that is too large is often stuffed into it with the help of the front extremities. Lurking for food takes up a large part of the day, as many small animals are usually preyed on.
Live food for frogs
Depending on their size, the frogs kept have to be fed from once a day to twice a week. Basically there are several ways to get the necessary feed: breed it yourself, catch it or buy it. Caught feed can only be a welcome seasonal addition as it is not always available. In addition, the nature conservation laws must be complied with and no invertebrates that are poisonous or contaminated with pesticides should be fed. Even when buying, it must be ensured that the necessary sizes of the invertebrates are available at all times. Your own forage breeding is therefore to be regarded as the optimum, because this means that nutritious food is always available in a suitable size and quantity.
The following food animals are suitable for a healthy diet of frogs: fruit flies (preferably flightless), oven fish, springtails, different types of crickets, crickets, grasshoppers (usually only the softer stages), meal beetles and their larvae, earthworms of different types, different types of cockroaches, flies, maggots .
Properly offering food
Usually we can just put the live food animals in the terrarium. This has the advantage that the frogs can hunt their food, so they are kept busy in a natural way. Basically, only as much food should be given into the terrarium as the animals in it can eat during one day. If too much food animals are brought in, they annoy the frogs and contaminate the terrarium. The regular enrichment of the invertebrates with vitaminized minerals is important for a healthy diet of the frogs. Frogs quickly notice that there are prey in the terrarium and react accordingly. Of course, the food must be offered during the active phases of the frog species being cared for. If the frogs are nocturnal, they are fed in the evening, whereas diurnal animals are best served in the morning. Some food species would hide immediately, e.g. B. cockroaches, mealworm larvae or worms, so they should be presented in suitable bowls. Such vessels must not be made of transparent material (glass, plastic), otherwise the frogs would injure themselves trying to overwhelm the food.
